White Tara is a widely revered female protector deity in Tibetan Buddhism, embodying compassion and wisdom, and is particularly renowned for bestowing longevity and dispelling illnesses and obstacles.
Origins:
Born from Avalokitesvara’s Tears: Legend holds that the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, upon witnessing the suffering of sentient beings, shed tears of compassion—the left tear transformed into White Tara, while the right tear became Green Tara. White Tara vowed to assist Avalokitesvara in liberating beings, becoming one of the central figures among the "Twenty-One Taras."
Meaning of "Tara": The name translates to "Mother of Liberation," symbolizing selfless, maternal protection.
Most Distinctive Feature: Seven Eyes
White Tara is also known as the "Seven-Eyed Goddess," her most unique hallmark:
Two eyes: Ordinary eyes that observe the world.
Third eye on the forehead: Sees the realms of the ten directions (sacred Buddha-fields).
Eyes on palms and soles: Perceive suffering in the human realm, especially physical ailments and misfortunes.
These seven eyes signify her omniscience, enabling her to precisely alleviate suffering, particularly illness and life-threatening obstacles.
Iconography: A Sacred and Youthful Goddess
Snow-white complexion: Symbolizes pure wisdom and the power to pacify calamities.
Serene posture: Seated on a lotus and moon disc, her right palm faces outward in the varada mudra (gesture of granting wishes), signifying "response to all pleas"; her left hand gently holds a white lotus, its stem blooming with three flowers along her arm, representing the Three Jewels—Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha.
Radiant adornments: She wears a jeweled crown and pearl ornaments, appearing as a youthful maiden, blending compassion with vitality.
Symbolism of White Tara
White Tara is revered as the "Wish-Fulfilling Jewel for Longevity and Obstacle-Clearing," offering protection in:
Longevity and health: Dispels diseases and epidemics, restoring physical and mental balance, especially safeguarding women’s well-being.
Wisdom enhancement: Her white hue represents pristine wisdom, aiding academic success and clear decision-making.
Misfortune removal: Resolves life’s hardships (e.g., bad luck, obstacles) and fulfills virtuous aspirations, such as childbirth or peace.
